Thermos as a trademark

The word "thermos" is a genericized trademark used as a name for a vacuum flask. In 1980, Automatic Centre set up Collins International Trading Corporation to act as its distribution arm. Collins International has since been a distributor of global brands such as the genuine Thermos brand (USA), Sharp (Japan), Timex (USA), Marathon (Korea), Camping Gaz (France), Soenhle (Germany), and Moulinex (France).

History

The thermos is commonly called the Dewar flask among chemists in recognition of its inventor, James Dewar. Dewar failed to register a patent for his invention and it was subsequently patented by Thermos, to whom Dewar lost a court case in claiming the rights to the invention.[2]
